Acetabular Retractor with LED - Cobra Lighted Retractor
Symmetry asked HaA to develop a standard retractor body with an integrated light source optimized for illuminations of the acetabulum (socket of the hip bone). Requirements included integrating electrical components into the body of the handle, which needed to be comfortable to use, an integrated power source that can be easily inserted and removed from the retractor. The retractor is intended to be reusable, provided unsterile, then sterilized by autoclave before use whereas the power source is to be provided sterile and for single use.
HaA mapped out all potential risk factors to design the retractor accordingly. HaA’s recommendations for battery pack insertion and removal included a rubberized grip to ensure a proper grasp when securing the battery door. Also, collect physical tactile feedback to confirm to the user that the pack is securely locked in place. Plus, distinct labeling and icons to guarantee correct engagement. Concerning the on/off button, HaA concluded that it should be placed on the back of end, with intent to be activated with one hand during surgery. When dealing with the LED light direction, HaA found the light tubes could be parallel to the retractor to prevent light flaring into eyes of the surgical team during repositioning.
HaA’s other recommendations included angling the LED downwards, moving the LED further down the retractor blade and one hand actuation of light to deactivate it before removing the blade from the wounds.
